Journalists Carlos Lajud, Alfredo Jiménez, and Irma Flaquer were murdered for doing their jobs. Their deaths sparked protests in their countries, making people rise against censorship and impunity. Despite their outcry, the problem remains. With the help of The Inter American Press Association, we contacted the families of these renowned journalists and asked them to donate some of their objects so that we could extract their DNA and incorporate it into a journalist’s most used instrument: a pencil.
Panama’s President, Laurentino Cortizo, and Dominican Republic’s President, Luis Abinader, signed with the Immortal Pencils a decree that commits themselves to protect journalists in their countries.
